There are a few variations on deed fraud, but they generally work this way.
An identity thief chooses a house to steal - say, yours. They gather enough personal information about you to create fake identity documents like a driver's license, social security card, etc.
Then, they go to an office supply store and purchase forms, like a quitclaim deed, that transfers ownership of a property. After forging your signature and using the fake IDs, they have the forms notarized and file them with the county recorder and pay a small fee. Now your house is their house.
