Ae you getting sent to weird pages when you click new tab? Are you getting annoying pop-ups that are stopping you from doing your work? These can be quite a nuisance! Following these steps to you and your computer back to itself normal self.
Browser Extensions
Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the icon in the top right of your browser that has 3 horizontal dots.
- Click on Extensions at the very bottom.
- Right-Click on any suspicious extensions and click Uninstall
- When prompted, click OK to confirm uninstall.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Mozilla Firefox
- Enter this quick URL into the address bar: about:addons
- On the left-hand side, click Extensions
- Click Remove on any suspicious extensions
- Restart Firefox.
Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome
- Enter this quick URL into the address bar: chrome://extensions/
- Click Remove on any suspicious extensions
- Restart Chrome.
Browser Homepages-Tabs-Search Engines
Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the icon in the top right of your browser that has 3 horizontal dots.
- Click on Settings at the very bottom.
- Ensure that Open Microsoft Edge with is either set to Start page, New tab page, Previous pages or something preferred by the user that doesn't look suspicious is selected.
- Next, head down to View Advanced Settings.
- If Show the home button is enabled, ensure that either Start page, New tab page, or something preferred by the user that doesn't look suspicious is selected.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Mozilla Firefox
- Enter this quick URL into the address bar: about:preferences#home
- Ensure that Homepage and new windows, and New tabs are set to Firefox Home, Blank page or something preferred by the user that doesn't look suspicious.
- Next, head to the Search tab on the left-hand side.
- Under Default Search Engine and One-Click Search Engines, ensure that no suspicious search engines are installed or selected. If so, change and remove them.
- Restart Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome
- Enter this quick URL into the address bar: chrome://settings/searchEngines
- Ensure that Google or another well-known search engine is set as the default.
- Remove any search engines that may be suspicious.
- On the main Settings page: chrome://settings/
- Scroll down to On startup.
- Ensure that no suspicious pages are listed. If so, remove them.
- Restart Google Chrome.
Check for Unwanted Programs
Windows
- Open the Control Panel
- Click on Uninstall a program or Programs & Features.
- Scroll through the list of programs and look for any programs that have suspicious names, publishers or are missing a logo icon.
- If you do find something suspicious, confirm with the user that they wish to have this removed and then click Uninstall.
